Learning Traffic Rules
The COVID pandemic confronts us with many new behaviour rules. Silk Road International School has prepared corridors and school building to provide a maximum of safety. However the number of signs, lines on the floor and new ruels can be overwheling.
Our Austrian homeroom teacher of 3B Philipp Brinninger realized: “The reason we adults understand these rules easily is because they are just like our traffic rules”. So he developed a concept that is playful and fun, to teach our students the correct behaviour in the school cooridor during COVID rules and an understanding of traffic rules at the same time.
Learning COVID rules at SRIS. How to build your social distance car. (Student’s Instruction video)
SRIS homeroom teacher of class 3B, Philipp Brinninger, explains his students how to build a cardboard car. Students learn real world traffic rules and social distancing rules at the same time. After passing the quiz, they get awarded a “SRIS Driving License” – just like in real life. The game model even accounts for insurance costs, speed limits and other traffic rule violations. Students who break traffic rules may need to retake their license test.
The project starts with the students building themselves a cardboard car out of carton.
A presentation in class makes them familiar with the rules, which include insurance costs and penalties for not complying with the rules.
The students have to pass a test, just like in real life.
This formative assessment supports learning the complicated rules. When they pass the receive the SRIS Divers License
.
If they do not follow the rules, they may have to retake the driver’s license test.

… and the students because of COVID-19 we have to keep distance at school.
I know that you know that and that’s why we have now traffic rules at school at the corridor, which you have to obey.
You have to follow these rules and because of that we you have to do a driver’s license
at Silk Road International School (SRIS) and for this we thought we do a small handicraft (project) and we show you how your car could look like, which you will drive on the corridor.It also helps us with keeping distance.
So what you need for this is just a big box; you need a thread; you need scissors; you need something which looks like a blinker on the front of the car; you need a sharp knife; you need glue; you need also (something) like a marker and paper.
That’s it!
We already started for you and now i will start with the thread.
So what you will do:
You will make a small hole inside here and then you push the thread through the
small hole.I did (this) already on this side and then you
just make two three big knots then it holds your car.On your shoulders you will wear it then afterwards. Even if it makes now not so much sense for you as the video will just take maximum 10 minutes, i hope, and then (at the end) you will see the result [and it will make sense].
So now it’s very stable and if you look inside the carton now we
just cut this out so that you can step in with your feet.I will just do this just let me take a carton (board) underneath [to protect the floor].
And now we’ll fasten out. After we did that we make here a small window front window.
We did this [wrong here] and please don’t make the same mistake like me. So this is what can happen.So and now we also want to enter our door.
So here we’ll make a small door so that you can easily, very comfortable step in, actually, in your luxury Porsche Cayenne.
Then let’s make here a small handle so that you know where you have to open your door.
We will stick our lights on our car. So like this is in the center.
…
Our wheels, because our car also needs wheels, here are our beautiful wheels and then same on the other side.
…
I will see you again when it’s dry.[Video Cut]
Okay so now we just step into our vehicle, in our car;
we put on the security belts;
we check if blinkers are functioning and my (steering) wheel and i am ready to drive in the school.thank you and goodbye.
